This Boat Trailer surge coupler fits 2 5/16 inch balls and mounts on a 3 inch frame. It would be very common to use this Model 6 Surge Coupler on a Tandem Axle Boat Trailer, using a 2 5/16 inch trailer ball, that has disc brakes on either one axle or both. Typically you would have (2) 3500lb trailer axles, running 14 or 15 inch trailer tires, giving your Boat Trailer Axles a rough carrying capacity of 7000lbs, so this Surge Coupler would be perfectly adequate.
If you are just replacing a rusted out or broken Surge Coupler, make sure your trailers tongue measures 3 inches wide. This Titan Model 6 Surge Coupler has bolt holes that may or may not match up to your previous coupler. Typically you would use (2) 1/2 inch by 4 1/2 inch Boat Trailer Bolts to mount this assembly. This Model 6 Surge Coupler will successfully work for either your single axle or tandem axle disc brake system. A Boat Trailer Surge Coupler Works by using the force of the towing vehicle stopping to engage the master cylinder, applying pressure on the brake fluid to flow through the brake lines.
This Product includes the Reverse Lockout Solenoid. This devices threads into the rear of the master cylinder. (Your master cylinder is located on the back side of the surge coupler and has a pressure Cap for filling with fluid.) The job of the reverse lockout solenoid is simple. Two wires run from it, one as a ground, and the other connects to your wiring harnesses 5th wire (for 5 Flat connectors). This wire is commonly blue. Under normal operation while driving forward and braking the Reverse Solenoid Valve does nothing, however, once you need to reverse or back into the ramp, this is where the Solenoid Valve becomes crucial. When you put your truck in reverse, a signal is sent to the reverse lockout solenoid (through the 5th wire, which on the truck side connects to your vehicles reverse light) and the device blocks the flow of hydraulic fluid, this allows you to reverse without the surging of the coupler stopping you as you lounge backwards down the ramp. Keep in mind this means as you reverse, your truck is your only source of braking.
When installing a new disc brake system on single or tandem axle disc brakes it is not uncommon to spend a good amount of time priming the lines, and using a good amount of brake fluid. It is important to begin at the furthest away caliper when trying to get the fluid through the lines and out the caliper bleeder.
