This Breakaway Switch is essential to towing safely and is even required by law in some states.  Should the trailer come disconnected from the tow vehicle, a switch like this one will power the electric or the electric over hydraulic brakes on your trailer and cause it to come to a stop.  

The Breakaway switch works by connecting 1 of the wires to the power terminal on your breakaway battery, and the other wire to the blue wire on your trailer harness.  (There is no specific order for these wires, either can be ground or blue wire and vice versa).
